PLACES AND FORMS OF POWER -INTRO -DOCUMENTS - CONCLUSION

POWER - GENERAL DEFINITION = the ablility to influence people and events. This ability can be exercised in many places and in many forms: there's  political, economic, social power, but alos individual power. So I'm going to focus on ordinary citizens who challenge power when it is abused. so my key question is: what means can ordinary people use to challenge authority?

-DOCUMENTS STUDIED IN CLASS

a. The film poster and the trailer of a movie called " THREE BILLBAORDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI". The film is about a woman who seeks justice for her daughter who was murdered and who challenges power ,in this case, the police.

b. FROM FICTION TO REALITY
Two  documents: photos and press articles which focus on groups of activists who use the same strategy as Mrs HAYES to denounce the lack of action of those who hold power at the political level.:

- The Grenfell Tower tragedy in London
- The Parkland school Shooting  in Florida

PERSONAL CONCLUSION

Young people, young activists = more and more involved in politics - are fighting for their fututre - have decided to take the matter into thier own hands - hold political power accountable for their actions or lack of actions.
an interesting movement is emerging :  it's called THE SUNRISE MOVEMENT

Sunrise is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.

We're building an army of young people to make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.

We are ordinary young people who are scared about what the climate crisis means for the people and places we love. We are gathering in classrooms, living rooms, and worship halls across the country. Everyone has a role to play. Public opinion is already with us - if we unite by the millions we can turn this into political power and reclaim our democracy.

We are not looking to the right or left. We look forward. Together, we will change this country and this world, sure as the sun rises each morning.

-          Who’s Angela Hayes and what happened to her? A victim, the main character’s daughter, she was murdered 7 months ago – her mother rented the billboards

-          What’s the problem with the police? They haven’t been able to solve the murder and the mother blames them

-          Who’s the man on the phone? The local sheriff, in charge of the investigation

-          What is written on billboard # 3? How come chief Willoughby? The mother wants to know why her daughter’s murderer hasn’t been arrested yet.

-          Where does the story take place? In a small town, a rural town

-          “The more you keep a case (une affaire judiciare) in the public eye, the better your chances are of getting it solved”? who says that? Angela’s mother. She must be very bitter, desperate

Her goal is to attract the attention of the police and of the public, she seeks justice for hr daughter.

-          What kind of reaction does her initiative trigger in town? People are upset, angry, get violent

-          Who else gets involved? A Reporter, TV, The billboards also attract media attention

RECAP: how is space used to convey a message?

The billboards are used to convey a message; public space is used to denounce a situation that has become unbearable for the mother. She wants the police to do their job and she wants the public to be aware of what is going on. She also manages to attract media attention.
